HOMEWORK
Homework is an important part of 6th grade. It not only helps students practice newly learned concepts, but also helps prepare them for middle school. Please stress the importance of completing homework to your child by setting aside a specific time and place for it to be completed. Other than a short math assignment, homework is generally not assigned on the weekends, but if students get behind on weekly homework or special projects, they may need to use some time on the weekend to get caught up. Late assignments lose points for each day they are late.
Weekly Homework
READING:
This year we will be doing a "24 Book Reading Challenge." Students will be asked to read 24 books of their choice from various genres throughout the year (6 per quarter). Some students may want to set their goal even higher! Book pages must add up to 75 pages to count as one book. Books over 300 pages count as two books, and books over 450 pages count as three books. Books read at home and in school from the first day of school to the last day will count toward the challenge.
Grades for the 24 Book Challenge will be as follows for each quarter: (This will be averaged in with the rest of their reading grade.)
Books read per quarter:
6 books - 100 pts.
5 books - 85 pts.
4 books - 75 pts.
3 books - 65 pts.
2 books - 55 pts.
1 book - 45 pts.
Students should read at home at least 30 minutes, 5 nights a week. They are required to answer 1 question from the “Reading HW Questions” each night and record the book title, pages numbers, and minutes read on their HW form and get it signed to turn in each Monday. They will receive a weekly reading grade for turning in the completed HW form.
WRITING:
Most of our writing will be completed at school, however, if your student gets behind or is absent, he/she may have to do some work at home or stay after school to finish a writing assignment.
MATH:
Math homework will come home each Monday - Friday. Math homework practice is extremely important as most students require the extra practice in order to learn the new concepts. Homework will be in the math workbook. Please look over your child's homework, check for accuracy, and sign daily. Math homework should be returned daily.

Special Projects
Students will occasionally have a special project to complete at home. Students will be given adequate time to complete these. Watch for information on them in the "Weekly Newsletter" on this website or the paper copy that is sent home on Mondays.
