Mrs. Cecil's "Class"ified News
Upcoming Events and Information:
*Important health information: If you can help us out, we are in serious need of hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes for our classroom! We continued to have about 16% of our students out with the flu this past week. We are encouraging students to wash their hands frequently and use hand sanitizer. We are also trying to wipe down desks, tables, counters. door knobs, etc. more frequently so we can get on top of this. Your help is appreciated. In relation to this, the school nurse has recommended that if your student has been out sick with the flu, they shouldn't come back to school until their fever has been gone for 24 hours.
Student Teacher - We have a student teacher from SUU in our classroom right now. Her name is Mrs. Hayden and she will be with us for 6 weeks. It will be great to have her help us learn! She will be doing most of the teaching for the next two weeks.
February 9 - 5th/6th field trip to the state capitol building in SLC. We will do a tour and hopefully get to watch a committee meeting. We will leave at 7:00 a.m. and return between 7:00-8:00 p.m. All students will need to buy a school lunch and bring some other snacks and a water bottle to get them through the day. Because of limited room on the buses, we will not be able to take any parent chaperones with us.
Band - Tues/Fri. - Bring instruments
Please help your student get in the habit of bringing their binder back and forth from home to school daily, showing you their planner daily, completing homework, and turning it in.
Team Captain of the Week
January 22 - Jacob
Math: Chapter 10: Area - Students will use area formulas to find the area of parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, regular polygons, and figures made of multiple shapes. Students should complete math homework nightly. Please ask your student to explain a problem to you.
Language Arts: We have begun a unit on "Chocolate." We have been reviewing the elements and structure of an argumentative essay. This week we will be reading several articles on the positive and negative effects of chocolate on the human body. Students will begin writing an essay, either arguing that chocolate is beneficial to human health, or that it has negative effects on health. They will have to use evidence from the research we have read to support their claim.
Science: We will continue our unit on Weather and Climate. We will learn about how and why water cycles through Earth systems and how energy related concepts affect our weather and climate. This week we will continue focusing on climate and what processes moderate temperatures around the globe.
Social Studies: Some of our social studies instruction will be integrated into our language arts this year. We will have some concentrated study of our social studies core the last couple months of school through some special projects such as Renaissance Day.
Word Work: Students will be working on new vocabulary through our Lang. Arts program this week. Students will be responsible for working on vocabulary for 10 minutes per day.
Donations: Some parents have asked about what kinds of donations we can use. Here are some suggestions: sanitizing wipes, colored dry erase markers, hand sanitizer, ziplock bags (gallon, quart, sandwich sizes).
